  • ELYSIUM: a Paradise for Poets and Heros.

I am very proud to announce and MC this new reading series. This reading features the fabulous talents of our own community.

Joining us for our first event will be JILL NAGLE, editor, author, publisher, and now, poet.

Friend, collegue and a lovely, sophisticated woman of strength, Jill Nagle is responsible for such seminal volumes such as *WHORES and Other Feminists* and "MALE LUST". Taking a departure from the academic writing for which she is well-known, Jill has just published her first collection of poetry, "eFEMMEral Flesh: corporeal utterances* -a selection of her exciting poetry sublimely structured on the Kaballah Tree of Life.

JULIA VINOGRAD is a Berkeley Street poet. She has published 48 books of poetry and has three poetry CD collections: "Bubbles and Bones," "Eye of the Hand" and "The Book of Jerusalem." This year she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 5th Berkeley Poetry Festival (2004), and she has won the American Book Award of The Before Columbus Foundation. In addition to her numerous publications in magazines such as Street Spirit, she has also been published in the 9/11 Anthology called An Eye For An Eye Makes The Whole World Blind (Regent Press), The Outlaw Bible of american poetry (Thunder's Mouth Press), and Sacred Voices, Wit And Wisdom Of Women Through The Ages (Harper Collins). She received a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. Julia will be reading from her new book. She has been a friend of mine for a very long time and I consider her to be one of my biggest influences.

BAST is a woman of great beauty, intelligence and incredible spiritual power. Yoga practitioner, model, Tantric Dakini and extrodinary poet, BAST is a blessing of bliss! Our connection goes back to my earlier open mic days. Her poetry is FANTASTIC! I lost touch with her for sometime and I am very happy that I have reconnected with this incredible woman.

    BAST:

    sanfrancisco.tribe.net/person...3af87-a9c5-4923-bdf8-be32d2251688

HAM is the acronym of the outrageously gorgeous author of the outrageously funny *HAM'S Fabulous City Adventures*. Her exploits are gut-busting funny! (and she is NUT-busting beautiful!). Listen to her hilarous accounts of her exploits. Often sexy, occasionally disgusting, frequently peculiar, but ALWAYS entertaining!

    HAM-Bone Johnson:

    sanfrancisco.tribe.net/person...cafe0-b450-4dd0-bc8f-688308968ce9

When I first heard Eric's poetry, I knew there was a new talent in town to contend with. Everyones favorite make-out boy turns out to be good with his tongue with words as well! Eric's well-constructed poems have a rhythem and flow that equal the strength of his thought. Great delivery of well-written poetry from a strong performer.

    Eric S.

Join us for an evening of round robin readings from a group of exceptional talents.

Several of the poets will be selling their books and CDs, and you know, poetry is an EXCELLENT holiday gift.

The program starts with an open mic reading, so bring something to share if you dare.

    • [2-4-05] Sexy & Sublime Spoken Word: ELYSEUM 2

      Sun, January 8, 2006 - 9:24 PM
Were you at the last ELYSEUM reading?
Wasn’t that shizz off tha muvafuggin’ hook!
The last ELYSEUM reading was such a success, I’ve decided to do it again! (and again, and again if things keep flowin’, glowin’, and growin’!)

Format is the same: Starting off with an open sign up list. Read if you dare or care. Bring your poems, stories, rants, journal entries, etc. You are welcome to read as you please, but pleasepleaseplease, do NOT be boring! After the open list, we glide into the awesome featured readers.

      KAREN GARMAND

Karen has been a bad-ass on the dyke poetry scene for many years. She disappeared for a while to re-situate and get herself enrolled in acupuncture school. A teacher, surfer, artist, publisher, a black belt in the Korean art of Kuk Sool Won and a practitioner of Vodun, Karen is a mystic of high caliber! Emerging from hibernation, Karen brings to ELYSEUM her well-constructed, well-written works of remarkable content and her new take on life, love and spirituality.

      TRAGEDI McCABRE
(the hottie formerly known as Evil Pony Girl a.k.a Tabitha).

You’ve been stunned by her presence at the Kinky Salon. You’ve seen her at various fetish events, turning heads and dropping jaws with her amazing beauty and shocking antics. Now, she will further shock you all with her remarkable writing. I was amazed to find out that this remarkable beauty can write like no other! A complicated and compelling personality, Tragedi is an utterly unique individual of strong will, determination, self-creation and extreme sensitivity. Tragedi’s writing reflects her strength of character and her fascinating view of the world.

      MATT WOLF

Matt wowed the audience at the last WordBeat Reading in Berkeley. I was there to see Julia Vinograd feature when Matt took to the stage and simply exploded with passion. His works are powerful undertakings of self-examination. With his model-quality good looks and his smooth actors voice, Matt’s presence is intense and his performance style is sharp and compelling. He will read a selection of his highly praised erotica (-bring your own Kleenex).

Brought to you by Russell Reza-Khaliq Gonzaga, a.k.a. the Sensational SENSEI.

Feel free to BYO drinks or snacks.
Bring enough to share and you’re sure to make a friend or two.

Goth Goddess of word, verse and ritual, Serena is not just a beautiful sight to behold, hers is a voice to be heard and a talent to be reckoned with. She has blended her considerable talents with Protea, Suicide Girls, Apocalypstick and Catbox Theory.

        CLIFF BROOKS

With over 17 years of writing experience, Cliff comes to us with well-crafted tales of Horror and Macabre. He has facilitated several sucessful writing groups and has worked in independent publishing. He counts among his influences Micheal McDowell, T.M. The evening begins with a Fashion/Fetish/Costume presentation featuring our very own Goddess of Glossy Glory, POLLY PANDEMONIUM!

Here’s the scoop from Kearny St. Workshop…

          www.kearnystreet.org/program....html#29

THEN, after the presentation, we slip into the word-woven paradise of
          ELYSEUM!
          Hosted by Russell Reza-Khaliq Gonzaga
          (a.k.a. the Sensational SENSEI)

As a special collaboration with KSW
we will be rolling our round-robin
featuring three of the most incredible
Filipina-American writers in the Bay Area.

MANGO NEKTAR: Pantastik Pilipina Prose and Poetry

          ANNABELLE A. UDO

Aside from being one of the most stunningly beautiful Pinay’s around, Annabelle is SO on top of her game! Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Stockton, California, Annabelle A. Udo is the former Editor of Rewind Magazine, a Bay Area club/music magazine published in the early ‘90s. Additionally, she is the former Executive Editor for Wushu KungFu, Qigong, and World of Martial Arts magazines (-doesn’t that ROCK!). Annabelle lives in San Francisco, California and is a featured artist on “Evidence,” a CD documenting a collective of Bay Area Filipino/American writers and performers (Jeepney Dash Records/Bindlestiff Studio). She is the events organizer for SIGAW at the Listen & Be Heard Poetry Café in Vallejo.

          www.listenandbeheard.net/htmla...x.html

Annabelle really is one of the coolest people I know.

          BARBARA JANE REYES

Barbara has been a friend for a LONG time! We actually met at Café Babar about 12 years ago, back in the day of the WILD readings that used to take place there. Her work has been included in various literary zines, journals, and anthologies, inluding BABAYLAN, EROS PINOY, INVASIAN, and TIME NEW ROMAN: Poets Oppose 21st Century Empire. She is the author of an outstanding collection of poetry, GRAVITIES OF CENTER (Arkapelago Books, 2003). She had served as Editor-In-Chief of the groundbreaking Pilipino-American magazine MAGANDA. Currently working on her MFA at SF State University, Barbara is a graduate of UC Berkeley (-where the term “GO BEARS” has an entirely different meaning than it does in SoMa’s Leather District. Just thought I’d mention that since New Langton Arts IS in that area…)
          www.barbarajanereyes.com

          SUELTO TEVES
One of my dearest friends and sister in spirit, Suelto brings well-crafted poetry together with her powerful performance. While attending UC Berkeley, Suelto was a teacher in June Jordan’s highly influential arts education organization POETRY FOR THE PEOPLE. With a Masters in Creative writing she is currently a pursuing her medical degree. She is also a devoted student of Classical Tantrik Yoga and Ayurvedic medicine. She is also a martial artist accomplished in the styles of KajiKenbo, Kali-Silat, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and is currently adding Stav (Nordic rune-based martial art) to her stack of considerable skills. In other words: Don’t mess with this sister! She will have you screaming for mercy long before you can throw your first punch! All that tough stuff aside, Suelto Teves is actually one of the most well-rounded, articulate and kind-hearted people around… (-Just try not to piss her off… ((^_^))

          DIFFERENT LOCATION. CHANGE OF FORMAT
Again, we will NOT be at our regular location of Mission Control for this one. We will be at New Langton Arts, a magnificent gallery space in the SoMa district (details below).

Like the difference in venue, the format is going to be a bit different for this one: We start the evening with the Fashion/Fetish/Costume salon at 7pm. There will be a good chunk of time spent on the interactive Q&A session.

Then, between 8:30pm and 9pm we start with the round robin features. We are starting with the features due to the later hour.

After the features, we will have a limited open list. How many readers will have to do with how much time we have after the features. First signed up will gain priority. Bring your poems, stories, rants, journal entries, etc. You are welcome to read as you please, but try to keep it under 5 min. and pleasepleaseplease, do NOT be boring!
(Yeah, that’s right, Annabelle, I SAID IT!).

(Spiritual brethren and core of the Pilipino Community
          and Reggae DJ for KPFA)

EVIL PONY GIRL aka Tori Crawford

I’m proud to announce the command appearance of a true ELYSEUM star! You all wanted more of her, so here she is! Evil Pony Girl has not only wowed the ELYSEUM crowd with her intense and humorous work, but she is now MISS BONDAGE-A-GO-GO! (Congraduloso!). A fascinating and stunning model, she is currently in Larry Utley's "Women In Control" and she will be in Charles Gatewood’s soon to be released book “Dirty”. A complicated and compelling personality, Tori is an utterly unique individual of strong will, determination, self-creation and extreme sensitivity. Tori’s writing reflects her strength of character and her fascinating view of the world.

Often sexy, occasionally disgusting, frequently peculiar, but ALWAYS entertaining, Hambone Johnson is a force to be reckoned with!

            PURRVERSE

This girl has been trailblazin’ the Bay Area ever since she arrive none-too-long-ago from that eastern seaboard. Having already started the Bay Area chapter of The New Generation (the national network of young BDSM players) and having had been an outspoken and active member of the Poly Under 35 Tribe, Kitty PurrVerse is now also a writer for SPECTATOR magazine! –and would you believe she only recently turned 21! (whoa!). Kitty has also worked her way into the hearts of the Kinky Salon community and I will also attest to the fact that this girl can WRITE! It’s hard to believe how much talent she has! I have had the pleasure of reading her work in private and I am very happy to present her here at ELYSEUM.

            • [4-26-05] ELYSEUM: a Literary Menage a Trois!

              Sun, January 8, 2006 - 9:33 PM

Presenting a fun and thrill filled evening of literary awe and debauchery!

Tonight we are presenting three of my favorite people in a round-robin feature that is sure to thrill.

              ALEXANDRIA “DARKSWAN” VOLK

A goth fetishists delight, Alexandria is as beautiful as the decay of an ivy shrouded elm in the midst of autumn and is as deep as a wound so fatal it would make you gasp in wonder at the ironic beauty of your own impending death far before you would be even be able to scream in terror (-c’mon folks, I know I’m not as seasoned at the beautiful macbre as Alexandria, but you can at least give me credit for TRYING to be goth here…) –Seriously, people, this woman has her writing chops down. Highly educated in both the arts and sciences, Alexandria’s academically refined works have the prismatic translucency of gem-cut crystal and the ponderous qualities of Zen koans. A teacher of creative writing at college level, Alexandria is also a co-facilitator for the ELYSEUM Writers Workshop. Alexandria will be co-featuring with her husband, Mr. John Kelly.

              JOHN KELLY

Anyone who’s performed on his stage knows that John is not one to be trifled with! Known in the underground scene as the friendly but stern stage manager of the notorious Kinky Salon (-a task, he so succinctly describes as being, “-like herding kittens!”), John Kelly is, in his professional life, a master electrician and stage hand for the most excellent Conservatory Theatre Center. John Kelly’s technical virtuosity is informed by his understanding of theater from ALL standpoints as well as his incredible creative talents. At our second ELYSEUM event, John wowed everyone with a fantastically bawdy narrative in perfect rhymed verse. Left everyone in stitches, yes he did! John and Alexandria will be our very first wedded co-features! (c’mon in and FEEL the LOVE!).

              sanfrancisco.tribe.net/person...48dfd67

              CAKE

And completing our literary threesome is a gentleman who honestly is becoming one of my favorite writers. Scott G. Brown, so very well known as CAKE, is a short story author of amazing craftsmanship and morbid humor. Coming up from Santa Cruz and braving the winding, perilous highways, CAKE brings his well-written tales of Horror and Speculative Fiction. His works have appeared in "Royal Aspirations III", "Outer Darkness" and "Pennydreadful". Author of 3 novels and numerous short stories, CAKE is also a BurningMan Burner who lends to his reading voice a strong sense of presence and drama. A new friend of mine, he is the wedded partner of the goofy and glorious artist, RED HOT.

We start the evening with a limited open list.
If you have something to read,
show up early and sign up.

              • RUSSELL REZA-KHALIQ GONZAGA aka “SENSEI”

                sanfrancisco.tribe.net/templa...Card.vm

In 2000, the then-mayor Willie Brown declared May 10th official RUSSELL CONZAGA Day in San Francisco. This award was subsequent to receiving the Board of Supervisors Certificate of Honor (signed by Tom Ammiano, Barbara Kaufman, Leland Yee, Mark Leno, Mabel Teng and Gavin Newsom). After representing San Francisco for three years at the National Poetry Slam, Russell dedicated himself to teaching poetry and spoken word to at-risk youth of underserved communities. ELYSEUM was created from the sentiment that heroism is the natural flip-side of poetry. At the insistence of his friends, he will co-feature in celebration of this special declaration.

                www.sfbg.com/lit/inkslinger/ink3435.html

Oh, yeah… He is also the estranged husband of Tribe.nets favorite fortune-telling pooch, MADAME GONZAGA.

NEAL GORNEFLO aka “THE WHITE ARROW”

                sanfrancisco.tribe.net/templa...sics.vm

As co-founder of the overnight social-conscious networking sensation, ABUNDANCE LEAGUE, and member of SuperStar Avatars FIRST HOUSE (www.superstaravatar.com), Neal is clearly a man who walks the walk, and now, he’s actually talking the talk! Culminating his cultivated compassion into crystal clear commentary, Neal’s poetry is well-structured and is a collection of intensely considered coalescence of Essence. A passionate environmental activist, Neal Gorenflo brings a keen sense of observation to his struggle. We are proud to host his very first featured reading.

                TAYLOR SEVERE

A member of the Solstice Grove community in Marin, Ms Taylor Severe is a tremendous talent who has tailored testimonies and tales of transcendental truth. Drawing inspiration from the Music of the Spheres, the vibrations of the cosmos and from the life-energy of nature Herself, Taylor brings these mighty forces together into a catalyst of words and passion. A lovely young woman possessing Goddess strength and insight, this 22 year old wonder is clearly a rising star to keep an eye on!

                And as usual…

We start the evening with a limited open list.
If you have something to read,

ELYSEUM is BACK from our little vacation
And have we got a show lined up!
EROSTRANCE promises to be an amazing evening
of humor, erotica and transcendental, healing music.

                  Our features are amazing.

                  CHRISTINE McHUGH

                  sanfrancisco.tribe.net/person...ff0a6-8fa1-41f8-b560-a67afa48c303

Christine McHugh, aka FRESH, is a performance coach and theatre director who helps people take the stage with the amazing story of who they are or who they think they are. She has an MFA in Theatre from the University of Illinois, she teaches improv as a mindfulness practice and has subjected people in the Bay Area to her so called “expertise" in the theatre realm for the last 15 years. At least she thinks she has. Just between you and me, she is completely addicted to her stories or what she lovingly refers to as “the fucking freak show of my mind." Someone once told her to write about what she knows so she decided to go out and learn something about sex and then write about that. She's happy to find that you're never too old to go back to school. For more info go to www.lifeinfullbloom.com

                  BILL NOBLE

Bill Noble is a naturalist and environmental activist, poet, writer, Pushcart nominee and serendipitous polyamorist, stranded dizzily among the hormone-flushed inhabitants of Clean Sheets. His erotic stories have appeared in Best American Erotica, Mammoth's Best New Erotica, and a wide variety of anthologies and online publications. Three Crows Yelling won the 1999 National Looking Glass Award for Poetry. He shared dazzling suppers with Robert Oppenheimer during his Cambridge days, stood next to Wilt Chamberlain in the Oakland Airport, and is boyishly proud of his sturdy seventeen-inch "member." His favorite among his Clean Sheets stories is Big Hungry Woman. A collection of his erotic poetry, May Touch Redeem Us, can be found at Slow Trains.
                  www.cleansheets.com

This is going to be a particularly cozy, cuddly event.
We have a special request from a special featured performer
That our audience be able to lie down for her presentation
so we will have the futons and mattresses out for this one.
(bring a cushion or pillow if you can)

Certified Hypnotherapist NICOLE VANDERHOFF has a spiritual practice in Hollywood. She combines hypnotherapy with chakra balancing, using singing crystal bowls and various crystals in an innovative therapy called Chakra Meditation for Manifestation.
Previously only available through her workshops and private consultation, this method can now be discovered on the compact disc “Chakra Meditation for Manifestation.” (available at this performance) Chakra Meditation for Manifestation releases, cleanses and balances the chakras through guided visualizations and hypnotic suggestions. Nicole relates the issues we face in modern life to the chakras to release and clear them from our energetic and mental auric fields. Once these chakras are balanced and opened, she then brings down the Universal Spirit of Abundance to mix with the listener’s goals and desires to integrate them into each of the chakras. The listener can then attract this new energy into his or her life. Visit her website at www.trinitihealing.com

Please be respectful to ritual space during Nicole’s performance.
